WHAT IS VETERINARY ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is an ancient Oriental method of therapy and is used in a wide variety of human and animal disorders. Acupuncture is the use of very thin needles that are inserted into the body. These stimulate specific points on the body which affect certain biochemical processes in a beneficial way.

This modality came from ancient China and has been documented down through history as a very effective means of treating disease.  The principle behind acupuncture, in simple terms, is to maintain a balance between Yin and Yang.  These two forces keep the body in a balanced state and when a blockage occurs Qi (energy) is unable to flow along the meridians. In order to restore balance in the body we remove blockages using acupuncture.  Acupuncture is used to cause a physiologic response in the animal.

Acupuncture has been used to successfully treat animals as well as humans for at least 2000 years.  It is still the treatment of choice for one quarter of the world's population for many problems. Veterinary acupuncture is a healing modality which deals with the individual animal as a living energetic being, rather than simply as a catalogue of signs and symptoms.

Veterinary acupuncture is used for the relief of pain and improving the function of various systems of an animal's body via stimulation of the proper reflex points. These points are mainly located in the superficial muscles and skin.

Acting primarily through the central nervous system, acupuncture affects the musculoskeletal, hormonal and cardiovascular systems.
